Lumbee River Productions is committed to educating, training, advancing, and reaching out to indigenous youth, women and other minorities interested in the film industry who may be at risk for not completing their education. We aim to create written material, film and video media to train and utilize these students in film production and acting.
The Lumbee is one of eight state-recognized Native American tribes in North Carolina. They gained recognition in 1885 and participate at the state level in many ways, including partaking in the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs. They also participate in national organizations such as the National Congress of American Indians and the National Indian Education Association.
The Lumbee Tribe consists of approximately 60,000 enrolled members, most of which live in Robeson county and the adjacent counties in southeastern North Carolina. According to the 2000 US Census report, the population of the town of Pembroke, North Carolina, is 89% Lumbee Indian with the county consisting of 40% Lumbee.  The tribe continues to petition our federal government for full recognition.

Our Native Lumbee and minority students live in one of the poorest counties in the state of North Carolina.  The current high school dropout rate for the students of Robeson County exceeds an alarming 50%.  This region is also home to The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP), also known as UNC Pembroke, a public, co-educational, historically American Indian liberal arts university in Robeson County, North Carolina. UNC Pembroke is a master's level degree-granting university and one of 17 schools that constitute the University of North Carolina system. The enrollment percentage for Native Americans at the University is approximately 15% and we are passionate about seeing that number increase dramatically.
